More thoughts

20100219 So I probably need to start laying down a stream of consciousness each morning about the day's list of work items. As much to help me (re)prioritize as to let folks know what I'm trying to do today.

So, with that in mind, for 19 FEB 2010
1. Recompile WRFv3.1.1 for HWRF use on Ranger
2. Recompile and successfully run WRFv3.1.1 on Brazos
3. Troubleshoot WRF compilation on Hercules for Jenshan
4. Get the Climatronics particulate sensor (binning and counting! woohoo!) from Don Conlee's office
5. Doctor's appointment at 1100. Leave NLT 1030.
6. Meet with Guy re: CSE's recent gift of some Tesla systems
6a. Get my account request back into CSE so I can start playing with the Teslas

IF I can work through all these, I'll have had a successful day.

Donna's starting to work on page4's iCal server for the Academy. This will allow us to share common calendars if everything works OK. I still want to look at some groupware with calendaring, because, if this effort fails, we need to find something that's less "fully standards compliant" but not beholden to someone like Novell to give us calendars if/when VPR-IT stops supporting our office staff.

Learning to blog

So getting on and blogging daily isn't something I'd expect to do easily. I'm a bit too unstructured. However, I'll try.
  • Today: Looked at GFS metgrid problem some. No idea what's different. I need to delve into the various GFS files to look for sfc level data. Also, there's some LSM levels in the data that have to be sorted out. I'm at a loss to determine just what the problem is.
  • Gotta get radar images back up. And then we have to start restoring the data directories on mesonet, or revamp them. I'd love to hire Charlton to help get this sorted out... and Dayrl Herzmann. Two wizards, They're good at what they do.
  • Gotta scavenge for funding.
  • I need to work on the NWS proposal on TV radar harvesting. However, with TDWR now the norm, do WFOs need the TV station radar? I think so. I'd love to get some funding to work on a dual-doppler 3d construction that could be developed to provide data with glasses or natively to WFOs and EMs in real time via VRML or such.
  • Need to work on a non-traditional STEM weather education plan for CWOP.
  • Need to get the proposal to Dave Helms for CWOP servers. Gone on much too long. I need funding and a student or two to help manage this.
  • Need a Vaisala-ish "back yard" to assess consumer-grade weather stations. Longitudinal study, tied to the STEM idea. What consumer-grade stations are good, or otherwise. What can we tell with QC about trends and failure modes. Can we determine a FMEA matrix for each weather station? Can we apply bias and just-in-time maintenance to weather stations, including the nominally professional-grade hardware? Longitudinal comparison of routinely-maintained and unmaintained hardware. Comparison of wind-field data for several 10m and 2m anemometers (Stan Benjamin).

FIrst Ink... er... electrons

Loaded SnowLeopard Server this afternoon. It just installed. No gratuitous reboots, not complaints. It just installed. Now I've gotta grok users and groups administration. Luckily, Chris Mouchyn is still willing to help me with it. I'll try to not abuse the priviledge. Gotta figure out how to create users and remote iCal viewing. That may wait 'til tomorrow.
